History of the Venetian Blind
Whenever Venice comes to mind, most people think of lazy rides in gondolas on the canals, ice cream in hand. You might also be forgiven for assuming that what is known as the Venetian blind also originates from Venice. However, confusingly, this type of blind was actually appropriated from Persia (now Iran).
Traders from Venice discovered the unusual window screens during their commercial visits to Persia in the 1700s. A large number of them were subsequently shipped back to Venice where they became extremely popular with Venetian citizens, and later with populations around Europe.
Over the past 130 years, Venetian blinds have been a very popular choice for commercial premises across the world, often chosen for their versatility and their unrivalled ability to regulate light and airflow.
What is a Venetian blind?
Venetian blinds comprise a series of narrow horizontal or vertical slats made from either wood, plastic, fabric or metal (usually aluminium). These are raised and lowered to the required window level with string or ladder cords, which run through the slats to ensure that they remain spaced at regular intervals as they move together in unison when rotated. Usually, the slats can be rotated up to 180 degrees.
Venetian blinds can be adjusted either manually, or with a remote control. One of the main benefits of Venetian blinds is their ability to control the amount of natural light that comes into a room from a window or door.
When they are fully rotated to an open position with the slats spaced apart as far as they will go, the blinds will allow as much light in as possible whilst still reducing glare from sunlight and affording a high level of privacy.
When the slats are fully closed they overlap, completely blocking out the light from the window. Alternatively, all of the slats can be pulled up together to the top of the window, to let in the maximum amount of daylight if required.
